To Francis Childs (unpublished)
Philada. April 22. 1786
Sir,

I received yours of the 18th. Instant, and am glad to hear that you have got the Types I sent you. As to the italic Lowercase j’s and c’s which you think are still wanting. I am persuaded you must have overlook’d them, and that if you examine carefully you will find them. c’s in rows seen in a certain position, appear like o’s. and jod j’s compos’d in this manner   appear like long ’s. Having us’d that Fount a little in France I know those Sorts were cast, and all my Founts were cast upon the usual Proportions for English: yet as you will see by the enclos’d there were j’s sufficient for the French, which uses a great many more than the English, viz. 41 in three Pages, while the English Translation of the same Piece used hardly one. In a Fount for the English Language of 135,050 Characters, the Number of j’s is but 300.

In the Boxes you had, viz. in N 9 and 10 there were four Pages of Small Pica, which you promis’d to send back to me. I have just lost the Sale of that Fount for want of them.

I hope you have memembred to weigh every Fount as you undertook to do, and I wish to receive the Account of the Weight, as I apprehend you have more than the Quantity we reckon’d for.

You mention’d in one of your Letters your Intention of sending me an exact Account of the Imperfections. I have not yet receiv’d it. If after a thorough Examination you find there are any such, let me know what they are, that I may have them cast and sent to you. Wishing you Success in your Business, I am Your assured Friend and humble Servant
