From Sebastian Hartwig (unpublished)
Gotha the 9th of May, 1783
Much Esteemed Sir, Gracious Sir,

Your Esteemed Excellency will not take it amiss that I make so bold to write to you again. The love for my brother bids me do this because in the masculine peace again is reigning, and presumably Your Excellency will move back to America. I wish with all my heart that the Almighty, All merciful, and Gracious God take you into his care on your trip. and command His angels to guard you on all your paths, and bring you back to America and to your beloved Fatherland in high spirits, and that He will keep you in your Fatherland for many years in the best of health.

For myself I ask for the favor that, if you could do it at all, you might send 100 or at least 50 Louis d’or through His Excellency the Councillor Mr. von [Grün] to Her Much Esteemed Excellency the Mrs. High Steward von [Buchwaltz] who will graciously deliver and hand over such monies to me. When you come back to America healthy and well, my beloved brother will compensate you for the sum with pleasure; for I am God-fearing and have had the blessing to have served the Grand Ducal House for 46 years, as an honest and diligent servant. Should you however decline to send me the above mentioned money. I beg for your mercy to transmit to my beloved brother the enclosed letter/ It is perhaps the last one which I can send to my brother, because we are all old now and have one foot in the grave already, for my brother is 70 years old, I am 66 years old, and my wife is (?) years old, and our sister …

I commit myself again to your mercy and am the humble and most obedient servant of Your Highly Esteemed Excellency

Sebastian Hartwig
Saxonian Cammer Murius
NB As soon as I will receive the above-mentioned money, I will make out a receipt and send it humbly to Your Highly Esteemed Excellency.
