From [L. H. de Vetrimetmann] (unpublished)
St. Crux this 15th of July 1786
Sir

While Your Excellency midst the Admiration of Foreigners and the tender Love of Your country enjoys the Tribute due to a Life spent in improving sciences and promoting the happiness of Mankind I eagerly embrace this present opportunity of congratulating you on your safe return to Your native soil, and to the Honors, your fellow Citizens so justly have conferred upon you.

The rewards of true merit bestowed even upon a common man yield allways a secret satisfaction to a generous Breast, but when given to a person whose superior Abilities have proved usefull to the whole World, they heighten the impression to a Degree of sympathetic pleasure, as if we our selves were the Object.

In full hopes of Your Excellency’s resting assured, that theese have been the true feelings of my Heart at the pleasing News of your Installation in the Post so deservedly appointed for you, I beg leave to mention, that my warmest Wishes are, that propitious Heaven may grant America for a series of years the Enjoyments of they wise Counsels of her greatest Philosopher and Politician and at the same time I take the liberty of recommending to Your Excellency’s Notice and Protections the Gentleman Isaac Hartman Junior, who is the bearer of this, and whose and Family’s impaired Health obliges him to seek the benefit of a cold Climat and a temporary residence in Your Government.

Being happy not only in the Advantages of a good family, but also in the greater ones of uncorrupted Heart and gentle manners, he is possessed of my greatest regard, and I should be glad if my Intercession may be the means of procuring him Admittance to your favours, by which You in a peculiar manner will oblige me, being with the highest Esteem Your Excellency’s most obedient and most humble Servant

L: H: de

To His Excellency Benjamin Franklin Esq.
