Robert Keith to Conrad-Alexandre Gérard or Franklin[?] (unpublished)
On board Confederacy St. Piers, Martiniqe 17th. March 1780.
May it please your Excellency,

To indulge me, whilst I briefly inform you that the Frigate Confederacy is now sparred, and rigged, and almost ready for sea, she came here from Fort Royal last Sunday, is taking in Provisions &c for a cruse, after which I expect she will retrun to Boston.

I took the liberty to write you a few lines, sometime ago; in which I mentioned the loss of a small Bos of Furr: But lest that letter should be miscarried, permit me here to repeat the Substance thereof. As Mr. Gerard had, on board, a number of Boxes, of different shapes and sizes, it is possible mine might be taken out in mistake for one of yours; what suggested this to me was, one of our People saith he remembers your Steward James —— took such a Box from the place where this was deposited. The Box was about three feet long, two feet broad, and one foot thick; containing, 2 Otters, 5 Red-Foxes, 12 Fishers, and 4 Mink Skins. This superscription, on a piece of Paper, was nailed to the board: To Mr. Robert Keith, Chaplain of the Confederacy. If it so happened that this was taken by mistake, and shoud be found among yours, I shall ever gratefully acknowledge the favour if you will cause it to be disposed of, and in lieu of which, send of such commodities as may suit in Philadelphia, directed to me, to the Care of Capt. Wm. Keith of that City. But if it should not be found with yours, I hope no offence will be taken from this; as none was designed by your Excellencys Humble Servant

Robert Keith
