Your Note endorsed upon the back of Le St. Philippe Dieffenbach’s Enquiry with the Letter for George Mengs, was handed me by Collonel Lawrence; I have found upon Inquiry, that there is a family of the Mengs lives at German Town, but they originally came from Manheim; the Founder of them, who is still alive, is upwards of sixty years of age; is named Woollery Meng, & has been in this Country upwards of fifty years—The Name of Dieffenbach I cannot hear any thing of—I shall however make further search, & should any thing turn up, communicate it to you—Mr. Bartram has promised to put up the Seeds you wrote for, but they are not yet ready, I shall forward them to you this fall—
I request your care of the inclosed Letter for Mr. Dean—I have also to request your attention to Captain Hoops, to whom I have given a line of introduction to you; he had the misfortune of being made a Prisoner at the battle of Camden, & as he is not yet exchanged, has obtained a furlough for a few Months; he is Brother to Mrs. Barclay, the Wife of my very dear Friend Mr. Barclay, with whom you will doubtless become acquainted & for whom I ask every civility in your power.
Mrs. Bache, Master Billy, Miss Betsy, Master Louis & Miss Debby join me in a great deal of Love— I am Dear Temple Yours affectly
