From Wilhelm Augustine von Steuben (unpublished)

May it please your Excellency, not to take amiss my daring to importune you once more. I beg of you most Instantly to forward to my Son as soon as possible the enclosed letter. I cannot better express my gratitude towards you, than in praying that heaven will vouchsafe to shower its choicest blessings on all your undertakings, and make the United States share ’em with you. I also most humbly beseech you to favour me with a short answer, that I may be sure whether the present as well as my foregoing letters have reached their destination. Seeing that my Son’s the American General are to be directed to your Excellency, but as I have not been able hitherto to receive one word of anwer to any of my letters; I shou’d almost remain in doubt, whether they came to end. However I request of your Excellency the acknowledgment of the receipt of the said letters. And I constantly remain with respect and veneration Your Excellency’s Most obedient and most humble Servant
