William Temple Franklin to Richard Bache (unpublished)
Passy 13 Sept 81
Dear Sir,

I am favour’d with your Letter of the 18 June. You wish me to give you some Account of Machine by which I copy my letters. To do it fully would take up a Time which at present I cannot spare. We are having one made for Mr. Secy Thomson, which will soon be sent him: when it arrives, it will explain itself to you & you may easily have one made after it. In order however that you may not be longer puzzled, with the Copy you have recd. you must know that it is done in the following manner—after you have wrote your Letter with a prepared Ink on Common paper you lay on it, so as to cover all the writing a Damp silk paper over which you lay a dry oiled Paper to preserve the humidity, & pass the whole through a Strong rolling Press, such as the Copper Plate Printers make use of. One Copy only can be taken.

Accept my Thanks for your kind Promise of endeavouring to fulfill my Commission relative to the Seeds. If you succeed, it will be the means of my making my-self agreable to a Gentleman of the first Rank & Character in this Country.

Remember me affectionately to Mrs. Bache & believe me with great Regard.

Your affece. Nephew
