Edward Bancroft to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Paris 18 July 1785:
My Dear Sir

I am glad to hear that you and your respectable Grandfather, had proceeded as far as Rouen without difficulty, & hope that he may find less inconvenience from his Journey than was imagined. We have no news here of any Consequence though the June Packet is arrived at L’Orient from New York. My business is not yet finished but I am encouraged to Expect it will be in a very few days. Mr. Houdon setts out this Evening, & by him I shall trouble you with this Letter, and another inclosed for my Brother, which I beg leave to recommend to your Care & him to your Acquaintance. He was unfortunately not on our side during the late Contest; but as that is over without his having incurred any particular disqualification I hope & believe that he will give no future Cause of Dissatisfaction.

I beg you will assure your Grandfather of my best Wishes, and of my most affectionate and grateful remembrance. I shall write both to you and him from London, and be always happy in every opportunity of being useful to either.

I beg my very respectful Compliments to Mrs. & Mr. Beach. remember me also to Mr. Benjamin Beach. Were I a Bishop, I would say God Bless you all, and without being one, I hope he will do it.

Should you at any time favour me with a Line it may be directed to the Care of Mr. Joshua Johnson London.

I am always My Dear Sir Your truly Affectionate friend & very Humble Servant

Edwd. Bancroft
