From Robert Aitken (unpublished)
Philada. 16 Jany. 1789
Sir,

I am going on with the printing of Vol. 1st. American Philosophical Transactions, I have finished only the two first sheets of the work, and it hath been found, not nicely corrected, I have applied to Mr. Robert Patterson as a fit person to look over my sheets and believe him to be very capable—but find him often pre-engaged with College—you know Sir; If I am not pretty punctually answered with the corrections my press must be at rest, and much time left to my great disadvantage.

I therefore earnestly request that your Society will take such order in this matter, as some person may be appointed to correct the press—And that every individual who have furnished pieces in this first vol. may have, their corrections or amendments ready, to save time. I will attend, with pleasure to every correction, or Ammendment you please to make but At same time, if you allow me to go on at the freedom of my own Will, who am no connoisieur in these matters and mistakes or rather Matters left in this Edit. not attended to I will find too good a plea of excuse.

I have thought it necessary to give this intimation, and will chearfully, and with the outmost punctuality attend to your Superior Judgement and direction in forementioned Work. I have Sire, the Honor to be Your very humble Servant

Robt. Aitken
