Esteemed Friend,

When your Committee attended to vew the instrument I had form’d some time past, for     the Longitude, Some of them inform’d me, that if an Instrument Could be Contrived, that wod take the attitude of the Sun and moon, and their Distance apart, it wood be a very usefull improvement, on Looking at the thing proposed it first Looded impracticable, but the thought (after some time) Struck me, by which I Saw it may be Done, and accordingly have since form’d a Rough Draft or instrument, that will Shew the principles, by which one man may take the altitude of one of those Bodys, and their Distence apart on a Direct Line from one to the other, at the same time, and the altitude of the other, I belive in 4- 5- or 6 seconds of time after, this instrument is Light and handy, and I Supose the Same thing may be Don as accuratly by one man with it, which has been Common to take three men and three instruments, I will Either produce it to the Philosophical Society for them to See it if they Desire it, or Shew it to a Committee if they think proper to appoint. Remain your Friend
