Jonathan Shipley to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Chilbolton Octr. 13th. 1784
Dear Sir

The being forcd to give up ye hopes of seeing You has occasion’d a very general Concern in our Family. Had Dr. Franklin been known to me only by his general Character without any particular Friendship I should still have wished to be acquainted with a young Gentleman whose Education had received all ye Advantages of his Wisdom & Experience. Indeed my dear Sir You will not set a due value upon those advantages if You do not think them preferable to every thing else the World can give You. You have probably heard some account of my Son ye Dean of St. Asaph’s Trial. Let me beg You to purchase ye printed Copy of it publishd by Blanshard & carry it to my venerable Friend. He, for my sake, will feel himself interested in it.

I am sorry I can now do nothing more, than wish You a safe return to him; that You may long be the comfort of his Age & that You may inherit his great & good Qualities. I am, Dear Sir Your obedient & affectionate humble Servant
