David Hartley to Edward Bancroft
London March 2 1779
Sir

Not knowing whether you will receive this at Calais or indeed whether you will ever receive it at all. I shall only trouble you with a single line (if you shd receive it) to tell you that the Cartel ship is actually sailed & that it is not thought necessary by the persons to whom I have made application, for any person to be upon the spot to explain what is thought to be too simple in its nature to require any explanation. & wch now that it is once begun will be carried on without any farther rubs. This is the Substance of the answer wch I have recd to the aplication wch. I was desired to make & wch I transmitt by this days post to Paris.

I am &c
