From John George Hoffmann (unpublished)
Hirschberg in Silesia the 10 October 1783.
Most Honoured Sir!

It was in the year 1777. when I took the Liberty representing to your Honour by my Letter, that I had large Linnen Manufactorys here in this Country, and humbly intreated your Honour, for to recommend my house and fabricks to your Countrymen at the different Places and trading Citys of the independing States of Nord America. Whereto your Honour was pleased to have written me and answer, dated Paris the 13th January 1778 signed by Mr. Silas Dean, in behalf of Messrs Franklin Dean & Lee and to assure me that it might be the case soon, For to have occasion of our sundry Linnen Articles for America, but as you were not in the Business of purchasing yourselves, could only recommend your Countrymen to me. Peace being since come about, I begg leave to put you in minde of your kind Promises in recommending me to some good Houses in your trading Citys of Nord America, or to give me up their Names.

It would be a great honour to me, to be chusen on your Kind recommendation, Factor and Commissioner of any Company or singel house in anyone of the trading Towns of the Independing States for to buy and sent goods for accot. of the American Independent Houses and for what they might order direct from the spot of fabricks here, in our Linnen manufactorys, for to be shipd off for America by the way of Stettin or Hambro.

I begg leave to assure your Honour that I am in the way to execute any orders in the sundry Silesia Linnen Articles, on the most reasonable terms and of the best fabricks, and that my Endeavours shall not be wanting in using such means, for to promote and facilitate any undertaking to the full content of those, who are pleased to intrust me with their orders.

I also begg leave to acquaint your Honour, that I am elected to be President in the Assemblys of our Merchants here in this part of the Country and manufactorys, by which means I got informed that our prussian King is inclined to sent some Envoys or Ambassadors which have knowledge of Trade and Commerce to your trading Places of the united Provinces of Nord America in order to form Connextions and to engage if requisite in Treatys of Commerce. I should acknowledge it as a particular favour, if your Honour would be pleased to give me your Opinion about it, and whether such Ambassadys might be wellcome and of any use to both the American States and his Majestys Dominiain. I am most respectfully. Your Honours very humble servant.

John George Hoffman
