Henry Emanuel Lutterloh to American Commissioner or Commissioners (unpublished)
Hotel de Spagne, Rue Dauphine, Faubourg St Germain, January 21, 1777
Sirs!

As You think the Undertaking of bringing my Men here, for Your Own Account to expensive and to Dangerous as allso the Reiffell Guns. And I being upon my honour resolved to go to America into Your Service and having likewise a great desire to Serve You before I go, and to leave Not my Men, all to others which Mortifyes me Much to do. I have to propose an other Usuall Plan. That is I would go to Collen? and order my Men take out of them 20, or 24 the best Men   (and Send the rest to Prussia.) As allso buy 150 or 200 extra good Reiffell Guns and bring them all with the Men upon my Own Risics to Nantes or any other Port. Perhaps if I could directely from Dunkirke to America. The Men should not stand you in More than 4 ½ Guines. Only to have the pleasure to Carry them of and to Serve Your Country before I go. The Men would be good to Mend your New Ship which you will buy, and I would have them in 4 Weeks at the port. To under take this plan upon My own Risics I would beg to have an Advance of 200 Louis dors, which advance is no object and could be repaid by the Men, and Reiffell Guns.

If you leike this plan I will Set of immediately and beg you will Send Me an order to Call     If not approuved of I go on Saturday to Nantes as Mentioned yesterday but this plan I am certain would do you Service.

I have the honour to be with great Respects Sirs Your Most obedient and Most Likes Servant

H.E. Lutterloh.
