From David Steuart Erskine, Earl of Buchan (unpublished)
Edinburgh September 5th. 1786
My dear Sir,

Allow me to reccomend to your particular attention Mr. Phineas Bond who is setting out for America as Commissary for commercial affairs   the united States and as Consul for the middle states. He is a relation of my Sister in Law the wife of Counsellor Erskine whose Father Mr. Moore of New York had the honour of being your acquaintance. My Brother Thomas writes to me thus about Mr. Bond “He is one of the worthiest and best Men I ever knew in my life and this I may venture to say because I have had the pleasure of his intimate acquaintance for 14 or 15 years past. He is at the English Bar and was reccomended to Government in England by the united Voice of our Merchants trading to America.”

Some time ago I had the pleasure of sending you a letter by Dr. Minto who is an excellent Mathematician and a worthy Man, and if you are good enough to shew attentions to these friends of mine you will conferr a very agreable favour on my Dear Sir, your Excellency’s most faithfull and Obedient humble Servant.
