From Francis Childs (unpublished)
New York. Jan. 2. 1788.
Dearsir

Mr. Swaine on his return from Philadelphia informed me that it was inconvenient and uncertain for the founder to cart the imperfections by the lb. This I was not apprised of when I made out the List—but from the pains I took in calculating the weight of each sort wanting I am pretty certain it will be accurate. The founder, I think, can cart such a number as he supposes will answer the weight and with his calculation I shall be satisfied. If you have lost the Memorandum forwarded you for this purpose—please to let me know it—that I may send you another. I know, Sir, that what I ask is giving you a great deal of trouble, but from the amazing quantity of imperfections—which I compute at between 4 and 5 Cwt. uou will readily admit the necessity. There are too many of them to remain with me and I have no mode of redress but to have them completed by you—or to return such as has not been and—agreeable to a Letter of yours sometime since received.

Accept of the Compliments of the Season—and beleive that I am with great respect Your Humble Servant.
