From Fr. Adr. Van der Kemp (unpublished)
New york. 3 June 1788.
Sir!

Being favoured with a Letter from the Marquis de La Fayette, to your acquaintance, I flattered my self with the hope, that I should have a suitable occasion to bring them but to this day I had not been so happy. In the last of this week I shall make a tour throug the country with view to try, if I can find a convenient settlement for my and my family; I have no doubt of the Success of my endeavours, there Subsistance alone and Liberty are the utmost of my wishes. After my returning to new-york, which wil be in three or four weeks I intend to visit Philadelphia, and than I hope to be so happy to pay my compliments to your Excellency. Recommending my and my family to your Excellency’s attention I am with due respect Sir your Excellency’s much Obedient Servant
