Jonathan Williams, Jr. to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Nantes May 16. 1782.
My dear Billy

I have this day received a Letter which expresses a Doubt of the solidity of your Banqr. Mr G—d. His account astonishes me and I do not believe it. I have a high respect for Mr. G as a Man of Business and     and I love him as a Friend. But I cannot consistent with my Duty to the Doctor conceal this from him. Pray act with the greatest Caution be carefull not to wound the Credit of a worthy Man unjustly, Yet take Care of the Interest of the Doctor and the Public, and at all Events keep me out of the affair. I have a long account with Mr. G and very large Sums have been transacted between us. I believe indeed that when all he has accepted for me is paid I shall owe him money; but ’till then prudence would dictate to me to keep my Funds in my own Power lest his acceptances should finaly return upon me. Pray write me as early as possible relative to this matter and if it is all ill founded give me an opportunity immediately to renew my Confidence in Mr. G.

The Bills I send under Cover I beg may be returned to me as early as possible duely accepted.

I hear more talk about an american War with portugal is there anything in it? if so do not forget my Letter of Marque for the Spry.
