Samuel Powel Griffitts to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Montpellier Octobre 31st. 1782
Dear Sir

Perhaps a Line from a Friend at a Distance may not be unacceptable. I wrote to your honoured Grandfather from Lyons, acquainting him with my having seen our two young Americans in good Health at Geneva, since which It is now some Time since I have had the Pleasure of hearing of you, but as I am likely to be settled here for a while, will beg you to let me have that Pleasure, & to be a little particular as to Dr. Franklin’s Health; to whom you will please to present my most respectful Compliments.

We have here indeed a most superbe Ciel which to a Person coming from the Bogs of Paris forms a very agreeable Contrast. If you find any of our Countrymen dull with the gloomy Atmosphere of the Capital, you cannot give them better Advice than a Visit to Montpellier.

I am informed Mr. Fox has found out the Route to Paris after having sought it in vain in the South of France. If he does not lose himself at Paris, there is not so much Danger ailleurs. Will you please to present my Compliments to Dr. Bancroft & Mr. La Motte. With a great many good Wishes for yourself, I remain Your Friend & hble. Servant

S.P. Griffitts

Mr. Franklin
