From Michael Hillegas (unpublished)
New York June 3d. 1788.
Sir

The pleasure you have always taken to promote every improvement, urges me to introduce to you herewith the Honble Captn: Cochran and brother, both brothers of Lord Dundonald of whim I am persuaded you have heard, if not known, as carrying on (I beleive with those Gentlemen) the Coal Tar Works in divers parts of England and Scotland.

The Certificates which have been published of the grest effects that have been produced and experienced from the use of their Tar &ca: on Sea and Land, is really surprizing, and leads me to think, all it’s various uses are noe yet discovered.

This Introduction will give you the oppertunity of learning from them whatsoever you may further incline to know, touching any experiments which already have been made, and I have no doubt but you will give them and the Subject all that attention you on every occasion pay to others. I am with every sentiment of esteem Sir Your most Obedient Servant

Ml. Hillegas
