John Churchman to ———, with Certification by Benjamin Franklin (unpublished)

The effects supposed to be produced by two discoveries which are reported by John Churchman to be accidentally made by him and so far from being connected that they are as opposite as Day is to Night which are as follows. 1st. A method for ascertaining the Longitude, by Land or Sea Day or Night in any part of the Globe. 2d. For knowing the Variations and Dip of the magnetick Needle on any part of the Globe (thereby discovering the Cause) which may be known for any time past present or to come. 3d. The Use of the Globes inproved and enlarged with several useful Problems. 4th. A Method towards improving the Theory of the Tides, and setting of currents regard being had to particular Circumstances with respect to different situations &ca which is also supposed to lead to several other discoveries Certified this 14th day of Feby. 1787.
