David Salisbury Franks to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Nantes 26me de May 1782
Dear Sir

I thank you for the trouble you have taken in trying to get me a Passage on board the Eagle, tho’ I am sorry to be disappointed in my hopes and Expectations on that Business; my dispatches I must keep myself, the duplicates I would give to the Marquis could I get them to him with safety from hence, as it is I shall follow Mr. Jays instructions respecting them unless the Spry a Brig going around to Rochford can carry them to Monsr. De La Fayette. The Gloire in which Monsr. Le Duc de Lausunne and the Prince De Broglie had embarked for America is returned very much damaged by bad weather, those Lords are here, I have had the honor of seeing them, they tell me that they have sent an Express to Court and expect an order to embark on board some other frigate for America; I wish sincerely that I might get a Passage with them, I should not be at all anxious about myself, but the dispatches I carry justify my impatience on this subject, pray be kind enough to continue a little extraordinary trouble and apply so as I may have an answer by return of this same Post. If the Marquis is not gone be so good as to mention this affair to him. I beg you wou’d make my Respectful Compliments to His Excellency and to the Chev. Karalio and believe me very sincerely Dear Sir Your obliged humble servt
