From John Gardner (unpublished)
London. August 10. 1784.
Sir

By the return of the last Post I am advised from France that the Farmers General had been pleased to remit the Fine to which I had become liable by the unlucky mistake of my Broker in reporting my Tobacco. I am further advised that to the friendly interposition of your Excellency I am solely indebted for this almost unexpected favour.

You will please Sir to accept the most sincere thanks for this great favour and condescension.

That your Excellency may be restored to a perfect state [of] health, that our Countrymen may yet enjoy the great benefit of your public utility and you the pleasing satisfaction of beholding the prosperity of a prople to whose liberation you have so largely contributed is the most earnest wish of Sir your ever respectful and most obedient Servant

John Gardner

His Excellency Benjamin Franklin Esqr.
