From Josiah Flagg (unpublished)
Boston Sept. 12th, 1786
Honoured Sir,

An opportunity by Dr. Morgan, and the esteem I have for you, induces me to trouble you with a little more scribling of mine.

Our affairs wear a very gloomy aspect, and Business is entirely at a stand, owing to the late illegal Conventions. There has been a Mob at Worcester, which prevented the supreme Court from proceeding in their Business. This day, at Concord the Court sets for the County of Middlesex, provided they meet with no interruption, but the country People are determin’d they shall not, what the Consequences will be time will discover. It is not only those two Counties which use such rigorous measures to suspend the Courts but others are in the same predicament.

Last saturday Govr. Bowdoin gave orders for the Militia to be prepard to march with six days provision in order to quell the Mob and protect the civil Officers in their Duty, since, counter Orders has been issued, and some other more concilliatory mode adopted, which is thought to be more to his Excellencys honor than the former coercive measures which if had been executed a most shocking scene would have ensued as the opposite Party are composd of Resolute determind Men.

I think your well known good Advice to our Legislature would have a salutary effect and perhaps ward off the impending danger which at present threatens us with anarcy and confusion, ’eer this reaches Phila: you will have more authentic account of the proceedings. I have the Honour to be with the greatest Esteem your Excellencys most obedient and Obliged Kinsman
