From Wilhelm Augustine von Steuben (unpublished)
Cüstrin the 8th of June 1782
Most Honorable Sir, Highly Esteemed Minister,

I congratulate Your Excellency quite obediently to the magnificent prospects of the American United Provinces which have taken on through your praiseworthy and wise endeavors such possibilities, while the whole world has rightly been struck with amazement. I am taking the liberty to send again with this a letter to my son, the General. With the most obedient request, to send along with the first opportunity. Since I do not know what I should think of my son becausse there has been no answer received upon all my letters during the time of one year, and I do wish, before the end of my life, to be assured of his well-being.

Your Excellency will forgive a soon-to-be eighty-four-year-old man, that he incommodate you with his letters so often. But since I do not know of any other way, I follow my trust in your human kindness which is known the world over [and ask] that you will look kindly upon my request and let me know whether my letter did reach you.

I am to the end of my life with all conceivable esteem the most obedient servant of Your Excellency,

W.A. von Steuben
Insigneur Major and Knight of the
