From John Coakley(?) Lettson (unpublished)
London July 24. 1785.

I have been extremely anxious to hear from Dr. Franklin, before he left Europe; but I cannot be ignorant of the importance of his avocations, upon such an aera; May I still hope for that favour, which his last letter gave me reason to hope for; Nothing else retards a Publication I wish much to complete this year.

Dr. Rush of Philadelphia informed me of the establishment of a College at Carlisle, a village 130 miles westward of Philadelphia, and of a wish for the formation of a good library; to promote this institution I have sent off a large Box, (but I believe it will go by another) filled with books. The cultivation of useful science, forms the best foundation for national happiness, which I sincerely wish the Americans may amply enjoy. May I add that I most cordially congratulate thee upon the prospect of once more embracing thy native soil. May thou be blest with health and happiness is the prayer of Thy assured friend

J. C. Lettsom

I have herewith sent Dr. Fothergill’s Works for thy acceptance.
