From William Reiser (unpublished)
Hanau in Hessen this 29th Jan. 1785.
Sir,

It is Some years ago I read in the newspapers that You Sent vines with vinedressers to America. Perhaps thought I His Excellence will engage Clergymen too. I take therefore the liberty to write this letter and to give a description of my person and circumstances, that You may Se whether I be an object for America.

I am a Clergyman of the lutheran church and Protector at the inferior Gymnase of this town; 42 years of age, and if You will excuse the expression, well formed. To the Sciences necessary for a Clergyman I joined natural history with Some Knowlege of Mathematics, and when I left Colleges I made di   journeys in Germany, to france and England. I preach in german, and if it Should be of Some use, do the Same in french too. As for my circumstances they are not So bad as to be forced to leave my country and a privat Boardingskool, of which I take the liberty to Send You an advertisement, Supplyes the wants for me a wife and 3 childern moderately. A love for a land of liberty directs me mostly.

If Such a person as I described, with a good heart could be wellcome in America and advantageously placed there, I Should be glad if Your Excellence would let me hear more of it. I am Sir Your Excellence’s most humble and most obedient Servant
