There is now a Bill for the appointment of a Geographer for the United States, and Surveyor General for the Western Territory before Congress.
I have made application for that Office, and as my dependance rests principally upon the recommendation of Gentlemen of known scientific abilities, I feel myself under the necessity of requesting the favour of a Letter from you to the President of the United States on that subject.
