Sir

I have the honor to inform your Excellency of my arrival in the French Packet on friday last, and that I am the bearer of many Compliments and friendly messages from your friends in France for you: particularly from the Duke de Rochefoucoult, the Comtesse D’Houditot, the Marq de la Fayette, M. Grand and many others. Mr. Jefferson was in London at the time of my departure from Paris, which was the 6th of April, but it was expected he would return in a few days, he has enjoyed his health perfectly well during the year past.

I did myself the pleasure of forwarding from London, a Poem by Mr. Bingham, which I hope has come safe to your hands. I have some expectations of having the satisfaction to pay my respects to your Excellency in Philadelphia some weeks hence: as I propose, after having made a visit as far eastward as Boston, to go to Mount Vernon in Virginia—but I am not quite certain whether I shall not take a passage by water. In the mean time I pray your Excellency to be assured, that wherever I am, I shall retain the strongest sense of gratitude for the personal civilities I have received from you, as well as the highest veneration for your character; being with sentiments of the most perfect attachment and consideration Your Excellency’s Most obedient and Most humble Servant

D. Humphreys
