Bryan, George (1731-1791)

Importer and public official.

Bryan and Thomas Willing defeated Franklin and Joseph Galloway in an election which determined Philadelphia’s delegates to the Pennsylvania Assembly (1764). Franklin won back the seat the following year.

Judge in the orphan’s court and the court of common pleas. Vice-president of the of Pennsylvania Supreme Executive Council (1777-79). Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court (1780-91).

Born in Dublin, Ireland. Moved to Philadelphia (1752). Quickly became prominent in that city’s Presbyterian community. Married Elizabeth Smith in 1757.
