Bassi, Anton-Benedetto

Italian poet, favor seeker.

Former pupil of Giambatista Beccaria. Best known for introducing Italian literature to the French. Taught courses on the Italian and English languages (1780). Member of the Academies of Sienna, Rome, Padua, Bologna, etc. Taught at Oxford.

Wrote to Franklin to ask for payment for the six copies of his Réceuil de poésies Italiennes (1780) that Franklin had apparently agreed to subscribe for. Sent Franklin a brochure entitled, Observations sur les poètes italiens. The work was published in July 1780. Continued in his attempts to obtain subscriptions for his works from Franklin.
