Succeeded Peter Collinson as factor for sale of American seeds (1769). Worked under tutelage of Dr. John Fothergill, who described him as “no botanist, but an honest tradesman.” Met Franklin in London. Later traded in Rotterdam.

Married Ann Fothergill, niece of John Fothergill. Resided in the house on Gracechurch Street formerly occupied by Peter Collinson.
