Valnais, Joseph de

French consul at Boston (1779-81).

Awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Law from Harvard College (1779). Established a French National Assembly in Boston.

By the time of his recall, the French Chancellery was in disorder and financial trouble, and he was bankrupt. Returned to France (c. June 1783). Recommended to Franklin by John Hancock.
