Cambray-Digny, Louis-Antoine-Jean- Baptiste, chevalier de (1751-1822)

French officer in the American army.

Recommended to Franklin by La Rochefoucauld and the marquis de Lafayette. Franklin, in turn, recommended him to Washington (1777).

Went to America. Lieutenant colonel in the corps of engineers (1778). Chief engineer at Fort Pitt in charge of constructing Fort MacIntosh. Captured at Charleston and imprisoned (1780-82).

Promoted by Congress to the rank of colonel (1783). Honorably discharged from service and returned to France (1783).

Born in Florence.
