Taught school. Ordained a Congregational minister (1764). Awarded a Hopkins Fellowship for graduate theological study at Harvard (1765-66). Called to Boston’s New South Church as an assistant minister (1766). Struggled with work load, salary difficulties, and family problems. Worked briefly as a storekeeper; later investigated opportunities in the Episcopal ministry in South Carolina and Georgia. Rector of St. John’s Parish, Collington, South Carolina (1788).

Son of Penuel and Frances (Davis) Throop Bowen of Woodstock, Connecticut. Educated at Harvard (B.A. 1762). Married Susannah Barrett (1768); several children.
