Entered the French service (1742). Aide de camp of Louis-Philippe d’Orléans (1746). Colonel (1747). Maréchal de camp (1761). Inspector of infantry (1761). Lieutenant general in the French service (1780). Commander of the French expeditionary corps sent to the United States (1780). Maréchal de France (1791). Resigned as commander of the armée du Nord (1792).

Arrested during the Reign of Terror in April 1794; released that October.

Born in Vendôme. Married Jeanne Thérèse Tellès da Costa in 1749.
