Digges, Thomas (1742-1821)

Shipping agent.

Moved to Lisbon (1767), where he lived until settling in London (c. 1774).

During the war, served as an agent for America in London, informing Franklin and other commissioners about British shipping and politics. Given oath of allegiance to United States by Franklin (1779).

Helped to support escaped American prisoners with money provided by Franklin, who later suspected him of embezzlement. Following the war, Digges remained in England and Ireland until returning to the United States (1798).

Born in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
