Pemberton, James (1723-1809)

Quaker merchant and politician.

Member of the Pennsylvania Assembly. Manager of the Pennsylvania Hospital. Member of the American Philosophical Society. Member of the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting Abolition of Slavery.

Resigned from Assembly because of his pacifist Quaker beliefs (1756); reelected (1765).

Born in Philadelphia. Brother of Israel Pemberton. Married in 1751 to Hannah Lloyd; in 1768 to Sarah Smith.
