Aufrere, George (1715-1801)

English merchant and M.P.

Merchant and subscriber to government loans; retired from business by 1770 and amassed a fine painting collection. Commissioner for sale of French prizes (1756-64). Authorized, with several others, to receive Pennsylvania’s share of the 1758 and 1759 parliamentary grants (1760-61). Director, London Assurance (1761-77). M.P. for Stamford (1765-74); seldom attended and never spoke in the House.

Son of Israel Antoine and Sarah (Amsincq) Aufrere; of Dutch and Huguenot ancestry. Married Arabella Bate (1746); one daughter.
