Windship, Amos (1745-1813)

Naval doctor.

Became the surgeon aboard the Massachusetts (1776). Later served aboard the Alliance in the same capacity.

Windship had a reputation as a cheat and a fraud. Left Harvard after having been charged with theft (1768).

Decades later, under the patronage of John Coakley Lettsom, he returned to Harvard and in 1790 received an M.B. (later upgraded to M.D.) and was simultaneously reinstated in the class of 1771 and awarded an M.A. retroactively.

Born in Holliston, Massachusetts. He married three times: Desire Bell in 1771, Betsey May in 1784, and Mrs. Abigail Lawrence in 1808. Windship had children by his first two marriages.
