Raspe, Rudolph Erich (1737-1794)

German writer and librarian.

Prominent as a science writer. Also acknowledged to be the author of an anonymously published book of tales concerning Baron Munchausen.

After being caught stealing from a collection of antique medals and gems of which he had been appointed keeper, he moved to England (1775). Elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1769); he was later expelled.

Born in Hanover. Married in 1771.
