Cooper, Samuel (1725-1783)

Clergyman.

Minister of Brattle Square Church (1743-83). Active in Massachusetts politics and involved in the Hutchinson letters affair. First vice president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Through Franklin’s influence, he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Edinburgh (1767).

Born in Boston. Married to Judith Bulfinch; two daughters. Brother William also corresponded with Franklin.
