Buckinghamshire, John Hobart, Earl of (1723-1793)

English diplomat and politician.

Member of Parliament (1747-56). Succeeded his father as earl of Buckinghamshire (1756). Minister plenipotentiary to Russia (1762-65) and lord-lieutenant of Ireland (1777-80).

Prior to the American Revolution, Hobart favored the adoption of stern policies towards the American colonies.

Married Martha Drury in 1761. Married Caroline Conolly in 1770. Both marriages produced issue.
