Turgot, Etienne-François, marquis de Sousmont (1721-1789)

Officer in the French Army, administrator. Interested in natural history and economics. A founder of the société royale d’agriculture (1760). Associate member of the Academy of Sciences (1765).

Brigadier des armées du roi (1764). Gouverneur général of Guyana, where he unsuccessfully attempted to found a new colony for the French government. Returned to France and spent the rest of his life in retirement.

Brother of the famous economist and contrôleur général de finances, Anne-Robert- Jacques Turgot, baron de l’Aulne.
