Madison, James (1751-1836)

American statesman.

Delegate to the Virginia constitutional convention (1776). Member of Confederation Congress (1780-83, 1787-88); also served in the Virginia legislature. Delegate to the Constitutional Convention (1787). Author, with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, of The Federalist Papers. U.S. Congressman (1789-97); sponsored the Bill of Rights. U.S. Secretary of State (1801-09). President of the United States (1809-15).

Son of James and Nelly (Conway) Madison of Virginia. Educated at Princeton (B.A., 1771). Married Dolly (Payne) Todd (1794); no issue.
