Hogarth, Jane Thornhill (c. 1709-1789)

Widow of artist William Hogarth (1697- 1764).

Posed for some of her husband’s works, including “Sigismunda weeping over the heart of Guiscardo.” May have met Franklin on his first mission to England. Probably assisted Franklin in securing a set of Hogarth’s works for the Library Company of Philadelphia (1766-67).

Daughter of Sir James and Judith Thornhill. Sir James, a painter, was a friend and patron of William Hogarth, but disapproved when Jane eloped with him (1729). Resided in Chiswick.
