Commissioned to command the Warren (September 1775). Commander of the Montgomery (1776). Was in charge of naval armaments, but was dismissed due to problems with his officers (August 1776). Sailed without a commission on the sloop Phoenix, out of Norfolk, Virginia (1779). Captured the brig Robert, but his lack of a commission prevented him from taking the ship as a prize.
