Longwell, James

Claimed to be a Maryland native and sailor who was captured by the British, escaped to France, and was imprisoned. Asked for Franklin’s help in obtaining his freedom; Franklin obliged.

In a letter to Franklin dated June 23, 1779, Stephen Marchant included Longwell's name in a list of privateer crew members captured by the British.
