Melmoth, Courtney (1749-1814)

Poet, playwright and essayist.

After being a priest and an actor, Samuel Jackson Pratt took the pseudonym “Courtney Melmoth” and began a literary career.

Spent time in France in 1777 and 1778; while there borrowed money from Franklin.

Suspected of having been a double agent during the American Revolution.

Born in St. Ives, Huntingdonshire, England. Married.
