Belton, Joseph

Inventor of a submarine gun. The invention impressed Franklin, and he introduced Belton to George Washington.

Captured by the British in early 1778. Was soon released and made his way to France, where he asked for financial help from the American Commissioners.

Franklin later paid him to undertake a mission, of a nature now unclear, on behalf of the United States.

Native of Groton, Connecticut. Graduated from the College of Rhode Island (1769).
